The Mystic Princesses and the Fireball

Continued from this post.

PJ, Eros and the Mystic Princesses’ parents have gathered in PJ’s living room because the Children of Ares sent a ransom note after kidnapping the girls. The group worried quietly, but Athena was the first to speak. “It’s going to be okay. Remember, while we were in New Orleans,  I taught the girls the acronym SKARED. They will find a way to free themselves from the Children of Ares.”

The Mystic Princesses and the Fireball

“And they learned self-defense techniques while living in my underwater castle near Kauai,” King Neptune added.

Just then the door burst open, and the girls ran into the room and Harmonie said, “You should have seen Breanna. She was amazing!”

“Yes,” Janna chimed in. “The Children of Ares tricked the principal at our school. They told him they wanted to read to the class for Children’s Book Day. Then they separated us into groups to play hide-and-seek because the book was about playing outside.”

Breanna's Fireball copy“They trapped us in rope nets, but they forgot Breanna can throw fireballs,” Coral laughed. “So she waited until they were gone and lit the nets on fire above our heads.”

“Then Catie took over,” Breanna added. “She turned us all into birds so that we’d be smaller and wouldn’t get burned. As soon as a hole was big enough we each flew out of the nets.”

“You girls are so smart,” Athena said. “I’m proud of you for remaining calm and finding a way out of a scary situation.”

The Mystic Princesses and the Ransom Note

The circular path of footprints in PJ’s carpet showed she’d been pacing the floor the last two hours. Where were the Mystic Princesses? They hadn’t come home from school nor had the police found them. She heard the sound of the postman dropping her mail through the slot and ran to the front door. She quickly scanned the postcard, noting its Jester City, Texas postmark. PJ immediately picked up the phone even though the note said she shouldn’t call the police. Next, she called the princesses’ parents, Eros and Athena.

How will PJ find the missing Mystic Princesses?

The Mystic Princesses and the Black Halloween Cats

The Mystic Princesses and the Black Halloween Cats“What did you do at school today?” PJ asked the Mystic Princesses while they ate their after school snack of bananas, peanut butter, crackers and milk so cold it would cause brain freeze if they drank it too quickly.

“One our friends brought her cat today for show and tell,” Catie answered before taking another bite of her banana.

The girls told PJ that the cat’s name was Magic because it was black and their friend found it right after Halloween the prior year.

Nicu – The Littlest Vampire: In ‘Big Fangs’ by Elias Zapple

Nicu - The Littlest Vampire: In 'Big Fangs'“What are we going to read next?” Catie asked.

The princesses stared at the titles on their eReaders and Breanna spoke first. “How about the next Nicu book, Nicu – The Littlest Vampire: In ‘Big Fangs’? I want to find out whether he is still being bullied.”

The girls agreed and took turns reading aloud to each other. They quickly finished the book and looked at each other. They were surprised that Nicu continued to fall for his brother, Adam’s, tricks.

“What did you think, Coral?” Catie asked.

Coral, who had stopped a bullying shark in Hawaii said, “I’m glad he got even with his brother.”

“But trying to get even with people can cause bad situations to get worse,” Harmonie said. “Finding a way to get people to stop bullying is tricky.”

“That’s true,” Coral agreed. “But what should Nicu have done differently?”

Breanna said, “Sometimes parents can help. But in Nicu’s case, his parents never catch Adam causing the problems. They always see Nicu’s reactions. But if he didn’t let the others know they were bothering him, perhaps they would stop. But since he does react, then it gives them a reason to continue to pick on Nicu.”

“Yes, that’s not fair.” Janna agreed. “Sometimes teachers can help. If Nicu had asked a teacher whether drinking an ogre’s blood would make Nicu’s teeth bigger, he could have found out that his brother, Adam, was playing a mean and dangerous joke on him.”

Catie finished the discussion saying that she hoped Nicu’s next book would come out soon so that they’d find out whether Nicu learned not to let the other vampires’ teasing get to him.

3 Bedtime Stories for Sweet Dreams

3 Bedtime Stories for Sweet Dreams“Summer’s almost over,” Breanna said. “We are going to have to start going to bed earlier, so we can get up for school the next day.”

“I’m excited to go back to school because we will meet new friends,” Harmonie added.

Then Catie said, “I’m glad my parents taught me a bedtime routine. It makes me fall asleep faster.”

“We’ve read several bedtime story books as part of our summer reading challenge,” Coral added. “If we share them, maybe parents will be able to get their children to go to sleep easier.”

“Hmm, where do we start?” Janna asked. “I know! I loved The Night of the Magical Flight by Melinda Kinsman. It is an excellent bedtime story that will surely give children dreams of wizards, magical carpet rides, far away lands and daring rescues.”

“I liked that one, as well,” Breanna said. “And I liked Night Night My Child by Ryann Hall. The book was about a mom and daughter’s bedtime routine. It made me think of my mom teaching me to brush my teeth, wash my face, brush my hair and kiss everyone goodnight before I went to bed.”
3 Bedtime Stories for Sweet Dreams

“I always greeted the moon and stars ‘hello’ before going to sleep,” Janna said. “And I told the volcanos not to erupt.”

“That was sweet,” Harmonie told Janna.

“What about the book we read a while back about puppies?” Catie recalled getting the girls back on the subject.

3 Bedtime Stories for Sweet Dreams“That was Tell Me How You Say Goodnight by Teddy O’Malley,” Janna said. “It had goodnight in different languages and I dreamed of puppies several nights in a row after we read it.”

“Just talking about these books is making me sleepy,” Coral said right before she yawned. “I think it’s time to get ready for bed.”

Duke & Michel: a Humorous Pre-Teen Book Series

I beg you, please help the Duke & Michel: a Humorous Pre-Teen Book Series to live on.  Having met cabbage throwing, slug-commander Elias Zapple online about a year ago, I knew his books would appeal to pre-teen boys. Skateboards, snot, farts and insults fill his Duke & Michel books.  And it is widely known by a few more than three parents that boys sometimes need encouragement when it comes to reading. I wish his books had been around when my nephew was a pre-teen.
